Explore and Play: Safari Sensory Bins

Dig for Dinosaurs!

Children will enhance their fine motor skills, creativity, and knowledge of dinosaurs while engaging in an interactive sensory play activity. This project will foster exploration and imaginative play, encouraging curiosity about the prehistoric world.

Materials Needed:

1. Dino Sand:

  – 4 cups all-purpose flour

  – 2 cups crushed graham crackers (about 10 full crackers)

  – 1 cup vegetable oil (for texture and moisture)

2. Dinosaur Figurines:

Small plastic dinosaurs for the kids to excavate.

3. Tools for Digging:

  – Paintbrushes (for gentle brushing off sand)

  – Small shovels or spoons

  – Containers (for digging or storing findings)

4. Sensory Bin or Tray:

A large container to hold the dino sand and keep the mess contained.

Optional AddOns:

  – Natural elements (e.g., leaves, stones, twigs) to mimic a dinosaur habitat.

  – Water for mixing into the sand for variations in texture

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Dino Sand: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and crushed graham crackers. Gradually add the vegetable oil, mixing thoroughly until the texture resembles damp sand. This mixture should clump together while still being loose enough for kids to dig into.

2. Set Up the Activity Space: Pour the dino sand into your sensory bin or tray. Bury dinosaur figurines within the sand, and place the digging tools and optional natural elements around the bin to encourage exploration.

3. Engage in Play: Invite children to explore the dino sand. They can use the paintbrushes to gently uncover the dinosaur figurines, using their hands or tools to dig and sift through the texture.

4. Discussion: As children discover the dinosaurs, encourage conversations about the types of dinosaurs they are finding. You can introduce fun facts or stories about dinosaurs to enhance their learning.

5. Clean-Up: When playtime is over, simply gather the materials. The dino sand can be stored in an airtight container for future play or can be used as a fun baking project!

Safari Adventure

What makes this sensory bin truly special is its versatility. You can tailor it to your child’s interests and age level, whether they’re fascinated by dinosaurs, animals, or simply enjoying colorful textures. The simplicity of the setup means you can easily swap out accessories and fillers, keeping the activity fresh and exciting every time.

Materials Needed:

Filler:

  – Black beans

  – Yellow pasta (like macaroni)

Accessories:

  – Small toy dinosaurs or safari animals

  – Colorful cups or containers for scooping

  – Tweezers or small tongs for added fine motor challenges

Learning Objectives:

  – Enhance sensory exploration through touch and sight.

  – Develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

  – Foster imaginative play and storytelling.

  – Encourage social skills through cooperative play.

To set up your own Safari Sensory Adventure, simply mix the fillers in a large bin and scatter the toys throughout for your child to find. You can even challenge them with specific goals, like finding all the dinosaurs or sorting the creatures by color. The more you get involved, the more memorable the experience will be! Invite them to share stories about their discoveries, or even extend the playtime by turning it into a themed art project afterwards.
