Halloween Hidden Message Experiment

Materials Needed:

  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • Mixing bowl
  • Paintbrushes
  • Paper or cardstock
  • Turmeric

Instructions:

1. Mix Baking Soda and Water:

  • In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of baking soda with about 1/4 cup of water. Stir until the mixture is smooth and has a paint-like consistency.

2. Create Halloween Designs:

  • Use paintbrushes to paint fun Halloween shapes or designs on a sheet of paper or cardstock. Let your creativity shine! You can create ghosts, pumpkins, bats, or any other spooky decorations you like.

3. Let it Dry:

  • Allow the baking soda designs to dry completely. This might take a couple of hours, so it’s a good time to do some other fun activities or crafts while waiting.

4. Prepare Turmeric Mixture:

  • In a small bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of turmeric with 1/4 cup of water. Stir until the turmeric is fully dissolved. This will be your hidden reveal paint.

5. Reveal Your Designs:

  • Once the baking soda designs are dry, use a clean paintbrush to paint over the designs with the turmeric mixture. Watch as the colors change and your hidden pictures emerge!

6. Let it Dry Again:

  • Allow the turmeric paint to dry, and then you can admire your unique artwork!

Why This Works:

The baking soda creates a white, textured design on the paper. When dry, it has a different physical and chemical structure than the plain paper, which makes it react differently when the turmeric mixture (which is slightly acidic) is applied. The turmeric’s vibrant yellow color makes the hidden pictures pop, revealing your Halloween art in a fun and engaging way!
