How Our Lungs Work

This activity is perfect for showing young children in real time what lungs look like and how they work in simple and easy to learn visuals.

Materials Needed:

  • LSW Free Lung Printable
  • Two Straws
  • Tape
  • Two Plastic Lunch Bags
  • Crayons

Directions:

After printing and cutting out the lungs with the link above, have your child color in the lungs. Give simple explanations as to what lungs are and why we need them and how they work.

ex. Lungs are inside our body. Right below our collar bones. Lungs help us to breathe. When we breathe in air our lungs expand. When we breathe air out our lungs get smaller.

Next take one straw and one plastic bag. Connect the plastic bag to the bottom of the straw. Secure with tape. Repeat this step with the other straw and bag.

Now you will need to cross the top of the straws together and secure with tape. Do NOT cover the entry way of the straws

Now you can place tape over the middle section of your straws to connect them to the lungs.

Have your child breathe air into the lungs to show how lungs expand when we breathe air in. Gentle press down on the bags to show how lungs deflate when we breathe air out. You can have your child hold their finger above the straws to feel the air coming out. Next have your child hold their finger above their mouth to feel the air come out of their nose as they exhale.
