/m/ Monster Mash Games

When teaching phonemic awareness, its important to include learning opportunities that are not just flashcards. Hands on learning like the games below help children to retain information and view phonemic learning as fun. Making reading easy and achievable!

Parents, it’s extremely important to remember that the letter ‘m’ doesn’t end in “uh”. The sound /m/ is pronounced like the /m/ in mat, not muh-at.

Monster Mash Game

Materials Needed:

  • LSW Free Monster Mash Printable
  • Scissors
  • 9 Cotton Balls
  • Paint
  • Water
  • Mixing Bowls
  • Hands or Item to smash with

Directions:

Cut out each square from the printable. Next decide on how many colors you want to use. We choose three to evenly divide the cotton balls. For each color you will need to fill up that many bowls with water and add paint. Mix thoroughly. Drop in your cotton balls into the bowls. Allow to sit for at least 10 minutes to absorb the color.

After the cotton balls have absorbed the color, place them on a flat surface with 3 in each row. Next take your squares from the printable and place them directly on top of the cotton balls.

Directions for Game:

Have your child identify all the letter ‘m’s they see. Share the /m/ sound with your child and have them repeat it until they pronounce it correctly a couple of times. Now explain the rules to your child.

When smashing a letter m they have to say the sound /m/. When smashing a monster, they have to say monster. Your child can hit the cards as many times as they want as long as they follow the rules.

If using an object to smash the cards be sure to go over safety rules. Have a towels or wipes on standby to make cleaning up easier.
