Tectonic Plates STEM Activity

Materials Needed:

  • 2 large Bins
  • 3-4 Towels or Blankets
  • Flat Surface

Instructions:

Place the two bins near each other leaving enough space in between for the towels and blankets

Fold the towels and blankets on top of each other to reach the height of the bins

It’s okay if the stack is higher than the bins

Next firmly squish the bins into place right on the edges of the folded stack

Explain to your child how the bins are acting like tectonic plates of the Earth’s crust that move on top of the mantle

This is called convergent tectonic plates; where plates collide

Ask your child to make a hypothesis on what land form this could create?/ What will happen to the towels when you push the bins together?

Have one person at each bin

On the count of three push towards each other

This will create a mountain out of the towels

Revisit your hypothesis’s and discuss
